He was confident that it was a foul. Now? Not so much.

Tennessee’s season came to an end last week in a Sweet 16 matchup against Purdue after a controversial call sent the game into overtime. Lamonte Turner was charged with a foul against Carsen Edwards, who was shooting a three pointer from the corner for the win.

Edwards missed, but hit two of three free throws to send the game to overtime. Purdue took charge in the extra period, eventually winning 99-94.

“It was a foul,” Tennessee head coach Rick Barnes said emphatically after the game. Now after a few days to digest and watch replays, Barnes isn’t so sure.

Last night on Vol Calls, Barnes changed his tune on the season-defining moment.

“The angle where the ref was standing was the same angle I was looking at. Where I was, I couldn’t tell how far Lamonte had gone by him, but I did see there was contact.”

“You look at it from a different angle, it looks like his leg goes out, because the ball was four feet out of his hands. He didn’t affect the shot. You want to contest it.”

“And I think Lamonte is being competitive. Honestly, I’ve had people tell me it wasn’t a foul either. But in a split second decision like that, it’s hard.” (Quotes via 247 Sports)

It’s one of those plays that looks different in real time than it does on replays. It was a savvy, veteran move from Edwards to put the pressure on the referees in that key spot. Foul or not, you hate to see such an incredible game and season come down to one split second decision from an official.

It’s a moment Tennessee fans won’t soon forget. For Lamonte Turner, a no-call in the Purdue-Virginia game brought back all of his emotions again.

That’s a cold reminder that Tennessee could have been in the elite eight had one split second decision gone their way.

Sure, Ryan Cline could have missed one of his seven three pointers. Tennessee could have made one more free throw. The Vols could have come out with more energy in the first half. But as the years go by, people will remember this game for that call at the end — the same way they remember that Tennessee-Michigan game for the “charge” called on Jarnell Stokes.

More reaction.

You know, they call it the Sweet Sixteen, but after last night’s overtime, season-ending loss to Purdue, I’m left with nothing but a sour taste in my mouth.

Sigh — well, here are some words on some things.

Hook, Cline and Sinker

If you’re looking for answers, there are several areas you can point to as to why Tennessee lost the game last night. Let’s start with Ryan Cline.

Cline, who is from Indiana, did his best Jimmy Chitwood impersonation last night, hitting six of his seven 3-pointers in the second half on his way to 27 total points. He shot 10-13 for the game and almost single-handedly fended off Tennessee’s inspired second-half run.

At the 5:26 mark, Tennessee took the lead with an Admiral Schofield 3. Cline then hit 3’s on four out of Purdue’s next seven possessions.

Before the game, Tennessee likely set out to shut down Carsen Edwards. And with good reason, too. He’s a good ballplayer. I doubt many people (except our very own Evan Winter — he called it) expected Ryan Cline to be the difference in the game, but that’s just kinda the ways things went for Tennessee this year.

Free Throws Prove Costly

This season, Tennessee was one of the better free-throw shooting teams in the country. They led the SEC and finished 16th in the country with a 76.4 percent average. The Vols finished 14-28 from the free-throw line against Purdue, notching a sub-60 percent mark for the first time this season. For some context, there were 13 games this season in which Tennessee shot better than 80 percent from the free throw line. This was an out-of-character performance at an inopportune time.

Admiral Schofield, who shot just above 70 percent from the line for most of the season, went 4-8 from the line and Jordan Bowden, who shot around 90 percent for most of the season, hit just four of his nine attempts.

Every Tennessee player who shot a free throw last night also missed at least one free throw. Kyle Alexander was one of the least consistent free throw shooters this season, hitting below 70 percent, but he went 3-4 from the line and had the team’s best percentage for the game (75).

Two-Faced Tennessee Strikes Again

Once again, Tennessee’s inability to play well for a full game was on display, and this time it cost them. Tennessee escaped Colgate and Iowa despite playing one half of good basketball, but Purdue made the Vols pay for their inconsistency.

The Boilermakers got just about everything they wanted out of the offensive sets early in the game, as their motion and screens left the Vols looking listless for the first 20 minutes.

I don’t want to take anything away from Tennessee’s valiant come back, because it was gritty and it was determined and it was all the other buzz words people use when a team plays hard but still loses. It just wasn’t enough, and unfortunately, that’s what goes down in the history books.

This has been an incredibly fun basketball season, and the guys deserve recognition for reigniting the fervor for Tennessee hoops. By all accounts, they’re wonderful humans off the court, and Rick Barnes’ media policy has allowed the fans to really get to know them beyond just the box scores. That’s endeared them further to the fans, and it’s also probably got a lot to do with this loss being so tough to stomach.

It was an emotional see-saw of a season, with high highs and gut-wrenching lows. There are no moral victories, but I’m happy they went down swinging, in form true to this team’s nature.

Hard to watch.

Through four years of building, it hardly seems fair to see what Tennessee went through last night in their Sweet 16 matchup with Purdue. But that’s the NCAA Tournament for you. It’s unforgiving and leaves no room for error. Your entire season can end at any moment.

For Tennessee, it was even more gut-wrenching. The Vols came back from a big first half deficit, ripping off a 14-0 run to take the lead, only to see Purdue come up with answer after answer down the stretch.

How do you say goodbye to guys like Admiral Schofield and Kyle Alexander? Here’s Rick Barnes addressing the team after the loss.

A few thoughts.

Tennessee fell 99-94 in overtime to Purdue in yet another wild NCAA Tournament matchup. This game had a little bit of everything, but above all else, Purdue took advantage of Tennessee’s proven weaknesses. Here’s what stood out.

Ryan Cline was the difference in the game.

Another game, another Tennessee opponent going off for a career day shooting the basketball. It was a theme for the Vols this year and it showed up when it mattered the most. Ryan Cline absolutely bailed Purdue out against the Vols, coming up with answer after answer down the stretch.

Tennessee ate into the lead in the second half, eventually going on a 14-0 to claim it for themselves. But Cline was there to keep the Boilermakers breathing, drilling three after three. He ended up 7-10 on the night from deep, scoring 27 points. He averaged 11 points per game on the season coming into this one. That was pretty clearly the difference and the edge Purdue needed. For Cline, it was a season high in points.

Cline continued a trend of Tennessee getting absolutely annihilated from three-point line late in the year. From Auburn part one, to Auburn part two, to Jordan Burns — Tennessee was consistently crushed from long range down the stretch.

The most frustrating part was that they seemed to be playing decent defense against Purdue. Carsen Edwards made several contested shots and attracted a lot of attention, which in turn freed up Cline. Edwards was always going to get his, but Cline couldn’t do what he did tonight.

Neither side could hit their free throws.

A lot of the reaction so far has been centered around free throw shooting. Tennessee was a dreadful 4-13 from the charity stripe in the first half, allowing Purdue to build a 12 point lead at the break. Tennessee improved to finish at 14-28 from the line, but it’s tough to think about what could have been had they just hit one more.

What Tennessee fans aren’t mentioning is what Purdue did at the line, however. The Boilermakers matched the Vols’ incompetence at the line, going 16-33 (48.5%). At the end of the day, the stat evened out. But it was a strange wrinkle in what turned out to be one of the wildest games of the NCAA Tournament.

Inconsistencies caught up to Tennessee

A fast start against Colgate, a Tennessee collapse, then a strong close.

An incredible start against Iowa to build a 25 point lead, then a total collapse followed by an overtime win.

Tonight was the opposite. Tennessee came out flat, lacking that defensive intensity that we saw to start the Iowa game. They weren’t getting to the rim and they were settling for contested jump shots. On the other hand, Purdue got what they wanted. Carsen Edwards hit just about everything he tried while Cline was red hot as well. The Boilermakers were crushing the Vols on the boards, winning the rebounding battle 18-8 at one point in the first half.

In the second half, it was a different story. The Vols flipped their switch and started winning defensively, which translated to the offensive end. They turned that energy into a 14-0 run, which brought them all the way to the lead.

THAT’S the team that could go on and win a title. That’s the team Tennessee needed to be from the opening tip. They weren’t, which is why they’re headed back to Knoxville tonight.

Bitter end.

All good things must come to an end and unfortunately for the Tennessee Volunteers, their excellent 2018-2019 season came to a defeating halt at the hands of the Purdue Boilermakers in the Sweet 16.

Jordan Bone got the scoring started, draining a 3 from the top of the key to give the Vols an early 3-0 lead.

But Purdue would answer with a 6-0 run to start off their night. Bone was able to cut the lead to 6-5 with another basket, but a Ryan Cline 3 put the Boilermakers up 9-5 with 17:05 to go in the first half.

Trevion Williams, a freshman for the Boilermakers, made his presence known early while Matt Haarms sat on the bench. He was able to snag three rebounds and scored four points in just a couple minutes of play, helping his team build a 13-7 lead.

Consecutive 3s from Jordan Bowden started a 6-0 run and tied the game, but Carsen Edwards scored five straight points to break the tie and put the Boilermakers back in the lead, 18-13 with 11:56 to go.

Sloppy turnovers helped Purdue get back on top and they were awfully familiar to the same kind that had plagued the Vols in the past three games.

Purdue had built a 21-13 lead thanks to 9 of 16 shooting. Things became worse for the Vols when Admiral Schofield went up for a dunk, but was rejected by the rim. Nojel Eastern was able to respond with a huge slam off the turnover to put the Boilermakers up 23-13.

The 10-0 run was ended when Grant Williams scored his fourth points of the game to cut the lead to 23-15, but Edwards answered right back with a 3 and pushed the lead to 26-15.

Purdue just continued to make plays from both inside out and would lead 37-24 with 2:39 remaining. The Boilermakers were dominating the boards 19-11 and Edwards had 12 points on 4 of 9 shooting.

They would end up going into halftime with a 40-28 lead, but if the Vols could actually hit their free throws, it would’ve been a much closer score. Tennessee was just 4 of 13 from the charity stripe and did not look like a team that was ranked as the number one team in the country for a month.

Purdue ended the first half 16 of 29 from the floor, while the Vols went 10 of 28. The Boilermakers weren’t much better from the stripe themselves, finishing 1 of 5.

Multiple turnovers and Ryan Cline came roaring out of halftime and pushed the Boilermakers’ lead to 49-33 with 16:22 left in the game. Another Cline 3 sent the crowd into a frenzy and gave Purdue its biggest lead on the night, 52-33.

But the Vols continued to fight. Within minutes, they cut Purdue’s lead to nine. The key play was an and-1 after Bowden hit a 3, and then Lamonte Turner came up with a steal and a slam to cut it 56-47 with 13:10 to go.

Edwards immediately came through with an ice-cold trey that pushed the lead back to 12, but Bone made a layup to bring the deficit back within 10, 59-49 with 12:30 left in the game.

A 9-0 run and two huge free throws ignited a 9-0 and brought the Vols back within five, 65-60. A driving layup by Turner cut it to a one possession game as the Vols trailed, 65-62 with 7:19 to go.

Turner, clutch as always, hit another 3 to tie the game and officially put the Vols on a 14-0 run, but Eastern responded back with a layup of his own to put Purdue back up by two.

Alexander was able to tip in his own miss to tie the game back up, 67-67.

But then, a miracle came through as Schofield drained a 3 from about four feet behind the permiter to give the Vols their first lead since the beginning of the game. The 70-67 lead sent everyone in orange into a frenzy and the Vols began to look like the team that was once ranked number one in the country.

Cline came through and hit a 3 of his own to tie the game back up, but Schofield hit two free throws after being fouled to put the Vols up 72-70 with 4:48 left in the game.

Schofield was fouled and made one of his two free throws to push the lead to 73-70 until Cline stroked another one for deep to tie the game and give him his 16th point of the second half.

Alexander hit another layup down low to put the Vols back up by two, but Cline hit yet another three to put the Boilermakers up 76-75. Schofield said “I can do better” and sunk one from the outside corner to give the Vols a 78-76 lead with just over 2:00 to go.

Grady Eifert hit just one of two free throws to cut the Boilermakers’ deficit to 78-77 and Tennessee couldn’t get anything done on the next offensive possession.

With 1:29 left in the game, anything was up for grabs.

Eastern attempted to drive to the basket, only to watch his excellent effort be reduced to nothing as the ball simply rolled out of the rim. Grant Williams just dominated his way en route to a slam to put the Vols up, 80-77 and things were looking good for the Vols with :34 left in the game.

But Cline, just cold-blooded as ever, drained another 3 as he faded away from Williams’ hand in his face to tie the game up at 80.

Rick Barnes called a timeout and the Vols knew it was time to get to work. Lamonte Turner drove to the basket and missed, but the SEC Player of the Year came through with another slam to puthe Vols up, 82-80 with :8.8 left to go.

The one thing that could not happen was Cline shooting a 3. But the worst part about it was the fact that Purdue had more than one player that could hit from outside.

Tennessee’s season was on the line with the next possession.

Edwards attempted to drive the ball to the rim, but Wlliams came through with a gigantic block that forced the ball out of bounds with :2.5 left to go.

All of a sudden, the situation became dire for the Vols as Turner fouled Edwards as he attempted the game-winning shot from beyond the arc.

Fortunately for Turner and the Vols, Edwards missed his first free throw and ensured overtime at the minimum. He indeed made his next two free throws and tied the game, 82-82 with :1.7 left.

Tennessee couldn’t get the ball in scoring position quick enough and were heading to the second straight overtime of the tournament.

The extra period began with Kyle Alexander picking up his fourth foul as Matt Haarms drove to the basket. Haarms hit one of his two free throws to put the Boilermakers up 83-82.

Turner missed a 3 on the next possession and Purdue made him pay by tipping in a missed Eifert shot to put the team up, 85-82.

A scary moment came on the Vols’ next possession when Turner was fouled as he went up for a shot. Trainers came onto the floor to help remedy the situation, but he had to head to the bench as Grant Williams checked back into the game.

Kyle Alexander had to take over and shoot the free throws - and he drilled both to bring the Vols within one point, 85-84 with 3:40 left to go.

Haarms missed a layup underneath the basket and the Vols had a chance to take the lead. Bone was unable to hit the 3 and Alexander committed an over-the-back, which was his fifth foul of the game.

John Fulkerson would come in for Alexander and Eifert would head to the charity stripe.

He hit both free throws and Purdue now led, 87-84 with under 3:00 to play.

Tennessee couldn’t convert on the next possession and Carsen Edwards made them pay as he drove to the basket for the easy layup and a five point lead.

Cline fouled out on Tennessee’s next possession, but the Vols still had a lot of ground to go with 2:00 left and it began with Turner’s free throws. He had a 1-and-1 opportunity after Cline foul, but couldn’t get it done.

The end result was Purdue rebound that led to a wide-open Haarms dunk under the rim that gave the Boilermakes a 91-84 lead. Grant Williams responded with a dunk of his own to cut it to five, but Eastern was fouled on the next possession and made one of his two free throws to push the lead to 92-86.

Bowden would foul out soon after and now the Vols were in serious trouble.

Tennessee wouldn’t be able to recover as they would lose to the Boilermakers, 99-94.

Rough way to end it.

After trailing for the entire game, Tennessee rallied in the second half to get back in contention in their Sweet 16 matchup with Purdue. A 14-0 run brought them all the way back, with the Volunteers eventually taking the lead.

Tennessee gained control of the game late in the second half, taking a two point lead with a little over eight seconds to play in the game. One final possession would determine the fate of both squads.

After a block, Purdue would have 2.7 seconds to make something happen. What happened next will live on in the heads of Tennessee fans all offseason.

The day has arrived.

Tennessee and Purdue will square off tonight in Louisville, Kentucky in their Sweet 16 matchup. The No. 2 and No. 3 seeds will do battle, looking to stay alive and advance to the round of eight this weekend.

What’s on the line

Well, everything — obviously.

A win would see Tennessee advance to the Elite Eight for the second time in program history. The Vols first did it back in 2010, beating Ohio State before losing to Michigan State in the following game.

(1) Virginia is taking on (12) Oregon after Tennessee’s matchup tonight. The winners will advance to play on Saturday with a final four trip on the line.

Here’s the schedule.

The Tennessee Volunteers are headed to the Sweet Sixteen for the first time since 2014, following a dramatic rollercoaster ride of a game against the Iowa Hawkeyes. The Vols blew the doors off the Hawkeyes in the first half — only to give up a 25 point lead — only to dominate the overtime period.

Survive and advance. That’s all that matters.

With that win, Tennessee advanced and will face a hot Purdue team on Thursday night. The tip-off time and TV networks have been set.
