John Kelly is a versatile athlete who played cornerback and running back in high school, but is expected to play primarily running back for Tennessee. Kelly played with four star running back Michael Weber at Oak Park High School, and was overshadowed at times by his more heralded teammate. However, Kelly has the type of homerun hitting speed and shifty running ability that Tennessee coaches coveted in a second running back. When it began to look like Bryce Love would commit to Stanford, the Vols turned up the heat on Kelly, and when push came to shove, the coaching staff chose Kelly over fellow Tennessee running back commit Kendall Bussey.
